Meet the Artist

MaryK Kiel Huff

I have been a working artist since 1980.  During the 80's and 90's I designed and produced metal jewelry of brass, copper and sterling silver.  I did wholesale business with retail shops and the market in Dallas.  I continued designing jewelry after my son was born while working-part time at an arts services company.  I began teaching in 1989 in a private school situation.  I became a full time art teacher with Arlington, TX ISD in 1993.  My family moved back to Abilene in 1999 to be closer to family and settle in a place where life was not so big-city
hectic.  I now teach in a high school setting.

All the while I was making jewelry I had a longing to paint again.  My work now consists mostly of collage, painting and mixed media/found objects.  The found objects include smashed metal objects from truck stop parking lots that my artist/art handler husband brings home to me. My pieces usually have something to do with women and our issues as women, mothers, teachers, wives, etc. including body image distortion, self-esteem and women's rights.  I also love to use humor in my work.  I use lots of things our mothers told us as girls:  Always wear clean panties in case you are in a wreck.  Ladies always keep their legs together...
